Helvia SoniX FS44: intelligent feedback control for professional audio installations

In the world of professional audio for fixed installations, acoustic feedback control – the classic Larsen effect – is one of the most common and challenging issues to manage. Helvia’s SoniX FS44 has been specifically designed to solve this problem effectively, combining ease of use with professional-grade performance.

It is a four-input, four-output processor designed for environments such as conference rooms, churches, schools, and corporate spaces, where multiple active microphones increase the risk of feedback. The device continuously analyzes the audio signal and automatically intervenes on the frequencies that generate feedback, preventing howling and resonances without noticeably affecting the original tonal balance.

At the core of the system is a 32-bit SHARC DSP with a 450 MHz clock, a platform widely used in the professional audio industry for its ability to process signals in real time with high precision. Audio conversion is handled at 24-bit / 96 kHz, ensuring solid dynamic range and clean reproduction, while latency remains extremely low—an essential factor, especially in live applications.

The operational heart of the FS44 lies in its notch filters: each channel features 24 independent high-Q filters, designed to remove only problematic frequencies without impacting the rest of the signal. These filters can operate in static mode, locking predefined frequencies, or dynamic mode, automatically reacting when new feedback occurs. The system responds within milliseconds, making the intervention virtually inaudible.

A particularly useful feature is the Auto Check function, which enables quick system setup. The device scans the acoustic environment, identifies critical frequencies, and automatically applies the most suitable filters. This ensures reliable results even without complex manual adjustments, while still allowing technicians full parameter customization.

In addition to feedback suppression, the FS44 includes comprehensive signal processing tools. Each channel features a 6-band parametric EQ, adjustable high-pass and low-pass filters, a noise gate for background noise control, and a limiter for system protection. Phase control and gain management are also available, helping optimize alignment between multiple audio sources.

From a hardware perspective, the unit is designed for standard 19” rack installation and provides balanced connections on XLR and TRS jack, with phantom power for condenser microphones.

Control is available via the front panel TFT display or through a computer using USB or RS-485, enabling remote management and integration into more complex systems. The ability to store up to 12 presets allows quick recall of different configurations.

Overall performance is solid: a linear frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, signal-to-noise ratio above 95 dB, and good operational headroom, ensuring reliability and sound quality in professional environments.

SoniX FS44 stands out as a complete and practical solution for feedback management, capable of significantly improving system stability and speech intelligibility. It operates discreetly, yet makes a substantial difference wherever precise, fast, and reliable sound control is required.
